CR Announces New Psychiatric Technician Program
Published on Dec 2 2025College of the Redwoods is pleased to announce the launch of its new Psychiatric Technician Program, with applications opening in February for the program’s inaugural Fall 2026 cohort.
CR will accept 10 students into this first class.
This new program is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements for licensure as Psychiatric Technicians in the state of California. A Psychiatric Technician is a licensed member of a professional services team working with individuals who are mentally disordered and/or developmentally disabled. Psychiatric Technicians practice under the direction of physicians, psychologists, rehabilitation therapists, social workers, registered nurses, and other licensed professionals.
“We developed the Psychiatric Technician degree in response to the growing workforce demand by our local healthcare providers,” said Dr. Keith Flamer, President of College of the Redwoods. “I am proud that College of the Redwoods has acted to provide students with knowledge and skills to work in the mental health field, an area that is greatly needed in our local hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings.”
Graduates of the program will be prepared for employment in a wide range of settings, including private and state hospitals, developmental centers, and community mental health facilities. As demand continues to grow, Psychiatric Technicians will also find expanding opportunities in the fields of corrections and human services, including day care centers, substance abuse programs, forensic facilities, special education, and many other areas supporting intellectual, developmental, and mental health.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to apply to the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) to take the State Board Licensure Examination.
Program Prerequisites are as follows:
· Nutrition (HO15)
· CNA Program (HO110)
· Human Biology (Bio 8)
Enrollment in the program is limited to applicants accepted through a merit-based process. A physical examination, immunizations, drug testing, and a background check are required prior to full admission.
